The emperor of Japan today made a desperate plea for his countrymen not to give up as the devastation following the earthquake and tsunami worsened. The rubble-strewn wastelands in the north-east of the country were covered by a blanket of snow, hitting hopes of finding any more survivors five days after the huge wave hit. And freezing temperatures made things worse for millions of survivors - hundreds of thousands of whom are in makeshift camps - as food and fuel run low.
